Analysis: Arsenal have found their winning midfield
By Kian Long
It’s taken Arsenal’s new coach Unai Emery some time, but he’s finally found his midfield trio.
Arsenal are enjoying an impressive win streak, winning their last 5 games in all competitions. It took Emery some time to find a rhythm, but the most important thing is the points being picked up. While the performances haven’t been the most impressive, Arsenal’s reluctance to let points slip certainly is.
They now find themselves in sixth place, and it’s thanks to a certain midfield chemistry. Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Aaron Ramsey all make up the perfect midfield, all of which offering something different.

Torreira has come right in and fixed the Gunners’ defensive frailties. This is an onus which was unfairly pinned on Xhaka, but he is finally free of the role. Now, he is able to flourish in a trait which suits him best, dictation of play. Arsenal fans often see him unleashing an impressive passing range. And obviously, Ramsey is the most attacking of the three, often picking up spaces to exploit in the opposition’s half.
Arsenal have always been proud of their balance. It was key to Arsene Wenger’s success, and now scraps of it can be found in Emery’s philosophy. While they haven’t lit the world alight, they certainly give analysts plenty to talk about.
Matteo Guendouzi has shown impressive form, while Mohamed Elneny is always solid. I feel like leaving the former out the starting XI is unfair, as he had a stellar start to the season, but sometimes that’s just the life of football. I have no doubt that he will use his time in the Europa League well, as will the always smiling Elneny.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles is also still ruled out through injury. He will be a valuable asset should any of the Arsenal midfielders become injured or unavailable. His versatility and composure on the ball gives him a strong case to make the starting XI.
Would you make any changes to Arsenal’s current midfield?
