Real Madrid dominate at FIFA’s award ceremony in London
Real Madrid’s representation at the FIFA was the strongest of any club across the globe. Let’s take an in-depth look at every Madridista’s profile!
FIFA’s long awaited award ceremony finally took place on Monday at the London Palladium. As expected, Real Madrid’s entourage ran away with the awards after a successful campaign in 2017/18 that saw them lift the UEFA Champions League title for a third successive season. As many as six players associated with Real Madrid now or in the last season grabbed accolades.
The biggest one- which was FIFA’s Best Player Award was awarded to Luka Modric. The Croatia international stood out ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah after a fantastic campaign on club and country levels. Modric’s victory meant that it was the first time since 2007 that somebody apart from Messi or Ronaldo won the best player award which is annually awarded by football’s governing body.
Even though Thibaut Courtois’ exploits were with Belgium and Chelsea, he is currently on the books of Real Madrid after checking into Spain’s capital this summer. The shot stopper was awarded with the Best Goalkeeper Award on the night and finished ahead of Kasper Schmeichel and Hugo Lloris. It was indeed a great year for Courtois who also won the Adidas Golden Glove in Russia.
Their former coach Zinedine Zidane was also in contention to grab the award for FIFA’s Best Men’s Coach for a second year in a row. The inclusion of the former Ballon D’or winner came after a superb campaign in the dugout which saw his side lift the UEFA Champions League trophy.
Real Madrid’s cortege was also strongly represented in the FIFA FIFPro World XI which is a team that consists of the best players of a calendar year. As many as five players were included in the list. Raphael Varane made his first appearance next to Sergio Ramos who was selected for a ninth time. Marcelo was another unanimous inclusion and the Brazilian was included in the prestigious team for a fifth time in his career.

Donning the midfield was the worthy recipient of the Best Player Award- Luka Modric. The Croatian’s inclusion came as no surprise after an astonishing year. He won several individual accolades in addition to a silver medal at the World Cup and a UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid.
Leading the line was Cristiano Ronaldo. While the Portugal captain is now on the accounts of Juventus after a lucrative transfer earlier in the summer, his exploits with Real Madrid led him to the podium apart from his national team. The Whites’ all-time top goal scorer was absent from the ceremony in which he finished second in the best player rankings.
The Puskas Award winner was the only topic of debate on an otherwise sought after night. Mohamed Salah’s victory after his goal versus Everton raised a few eyebrows as it was clearly not superior to a few other inclusions, primarily the overhead attempts of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo. The magnitude of matches in which Real Madrid’s frontmen scored was also much higher and one of them probably deserved to take the award home more the Salah.
