David De Gea is yet to sign a contract extension. Reports suggest that talks have reached an impasse after Manchester United’s poor start to the season.

A host of Manchester United players are set to see out their current deals at the end of this season. They are allowed to talk with prospective suitors in January and could sign pre-contracts before agreeing to an official deal in the summer.

The Red Devils could lose one of their best players as his contract expires at the end of June 2019. According to the Daily Mail, David De Gea is finding it difficult to commit his future at Old Trafford as he doesn’t believe in the club’s title-winning credentials.

In 2011, Sir Alex Ferguson chose the Spanish No.1 to replace the ageing Edwin Van Der Sar in the Manchester United goal. The transfer was confirmed on 29 June after the Red Devils agreed to pay the British record fee for a goalkeeper of £18.9 million.

David De Gea was criticized during the early stages as he was unable to deal with the physicality of the Premier League, making multiple mistakes in aerial duels. But as years passed, he acquired the necessary skills to improve his game. The 27-year old is considered as one of the best goalkeepers of this era and was named in the FIFA Best XI for 2018.

Multiple sources suggested that David De Gea has agreed to sign a new contract with Manchester United this summer. But recent reports suggest that the Spaniard has backed out after seeing his club’s poor start to the season. Club executive, Ed Woodward met with his agent, Jorge Mendes, who also manages Jose Mourinho on Friday.

The Red Devils are almost out of the Premier League title race and last month’s Derby County loss meant that the Carabao Cup is also out of hands. It is a valid point for De Gea to be concerned about his club failing to compete for top honours for the past couple of season.

According to reports, Manchester United are relaxed and are hoping that the player will sign the new £275,000-a-week deal soon. If De Gea decides against it, Woodward will invoke the clause to extend his current contract for another season and look to negotiate in the following year.
