Real Madrid have set their sights on signing Christian Eriksen. Should Tottenham consider parting ways with their Danish maestro?

Tottenham fans are quite accustomed to rumours connecting their top players with Real Madrid. Christian Eriksen is the latest in the long line of Spurs stars that are of interest to the La Liga giants. The natural question to ask is whether or not Mauricio Pochettino and company should even consider parting ways with their talented midfielder.

Reports emanating from Spain claim Los Blancos have shifted their attention from Harry Kane to Eriksen as their top transfer target. No one should be surprised by this development. Eriksen has been an integral member of Pochettino’s attack for several seasons at Tottenham. Combine that with his performances from Denmark and it’s easy to see why Real Madrid would be intrigued.

When it came to Kane, Tottenham flatly told Real Madrid they wouldn’t consider a sale at any price. It’s interesting to note that the club haven’t made the same sort of definitive statement about Eriksen. That means it’s at least something Daniel Levy and company are willing to consider.

Spurs fans might not want to hear this, but almost everyone at the club is available at a certain price. Kane is the exception to that rule. Eriksen is very important for Tottenham, but he’s not untouchable. That’s why Spurs are willing to at least hear how much Real Madrid might be willing to pay.

Let’s be clear, Tottenham won’t part with their Danish metronome unless they receive a massive transfer fee. It’s very possible Spurs will hold out for something in the neighborhood of £100 million. Real Madrid have the money to satisfy that type of demand. If they make that type of offer, it’s something Tottenham have to seriously consider.

Letting go of a player like Eriksen would clearly be a blow to Tottenham in the short-term. He is the best passer on the squad. However, his contract is starting to run down a bit. When you combine that with the fact that he’ll be 27-years-old this season, it’s apparent that Spurs need to start planning for life without their midfield star.

The only way selling Eriksen would be acceptable is if the funds were immediately reinvested in a younger replacement with the potential to develop into a world-class star. This is not a potential transaction that can be used to defray stadium costs. Selling a player like Eriksen would require a big purchase by Levy.

The likelihood of Levy sanctioning that kind of deal at the moment is very small. That’s why Spurs can’t afford to part with Eriksen at the moment. Instead, the club should focus on locking him up for the long haul. Selling him this summer wouldn’t be a certain disaster, but it definitely would not be a positive development for Tottenham.
