Liverpool will not challenge for the Premier League for a long time

Liverpool are leading the Premier League’s standings alongside Chelsea and Manchester City, but have not been grinding out the results of late. What’s worse is that they’ve been failing in front of goal.

Liverpool had gotten underway into the 2018/19 Premier League season on absolutely top form. The Reds have gone eight matches unbeaten since the start of the competition, winning six and playing out two draws and Klopp will certainly be happy with his side that sits on top of the top of the Premier League’s standings, level on points with Chelsea and Manchester City. However, I really think that Liverpool will not challenge for the title as the season progresses.

The Reds have gone without a win in their last four matches but with all due respect to them, their opponents came in Manchester City, Napoli and Chelsea on two occasions. However, it is very absurd of a team which usually performs in the big matches to be on such a run of form. They have been comfortable in a few matches but lack the convincing displays which make them solid and consistent title contenders.

The defense seems to have been finally sorted after a long time. Alisson Becker was signed to guard the sticks and has been an absolute asset for Klopp, as has been Virgil van Dijk in his partnership with Joe Gomez in the center of defense. Andrew Robertson has also delivered the fire from the left while Trent Alexander-Arnold has been functional through the right side.

Liverpool’s midfield had been the weak link in recent years, but just like the backline, there was effort made to give it an uplifting during the summer. A several number of new signings have been made, but James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum have been standout performers so far in the course of the campaign, while Naby Keita is also making his mark on things, though gradually.

The Reds’ attack was a grenade last year and used to dispatch opponents at will. At the start of the season, it seemed like Sadio Mane was in to make it to a big number of goals this season but struggled to maintain consistency, while Roberto Firmino has also failed to chip in with goals on regular instances. For once, we can’t let alone Mo Salah who has been supremely below expectations this season.

The goals are not coming for Liverpool after their attacking trio has gone missing in recent matches and the other players have failed to deliver the goods. It is a worrying sign for Klopp who needs to make sure that the finishing of chances is done efficiently in order to ensure consistency with the goals because thankfully, there is no shortage of chances.

To be truthful and cite with an example, the Champions League’s silver medalists are becoming a Manchester United of 2016-17, where the defense was absolutely wonderful but failure in converting chances cost Mourinho’s men heavily in the course of the Premier League season. As a football fan though, it will be amazing to see Liverpool lift the league title after over two decades but there is no way that’s happening unless corrections are promptly made.
