Barcelona made a costly mistake by letting Paco Alcacer go
Paco Alcacer’s red hot form in front of goal would be antagonistic for Barcelona and Ernesto Valverde to see, especially after making the costly mistake of letting him leave.
Barcelona underwent major changes in the summer transfer window of 2016. There were a lot of new names that came in, mostly after impressing in the Euro 2016. Samuel Umtiti was the main and most important person to arrive after an impressive campaign with France that saw them finish the tournament as silver medallists.
In the midfield, the defending champions of Spain signed a large number of players, including the likes of Denis Suarez and Andre Gomes, while Paco Alcacer was signed to fill in the attacking department. The signings were done in a bid to replace the departed Xavi and find advanced and timely replacements for Andres Iniesta and Luis Suarez, who were catching up with the dusks of their career.
Among a number of players who checked in, Paco Alcacer’s name stood out after he joined from Barcelona. The forward was widely tipped to do wonderful things at the Camp Nou, but his tenure with Barcelona was not a memorable one by any means. In fact, he never was able to nail onto a first team spot due to lack of chances.
In his first season with Luis Enrique, he started off on the bench but was able to rack up 27 appearances by the end of the campaign. But most of those came as a substitute and he was allowed to start only a handful of matches. Yet, he scored 8 times and got 4 assists during the year.

Ernesto Valverde took over from the current Spain coach in 2017 and had a pretty successful campaign in his first year at Barcelona. However, his hesitancy to rotate the squad limited Alcacer to only to 992 minutes across 23 matches. As a result, he left the club for Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan with an option to permanently shift at the end of the campaign.
In Germany he has not been able to nail onto a starting berth either, but has been on fire since his signing. In 204 minutes of footballing time for club and country, he has scored 10 times already and also given 8 assists. Of those is also a hat-trick which came in 30 minutes against FC Augsburg.
On the other hand, Barcelona are enduring problems of their own with goal scoring being a major issue. The Blaugrana have gone winless in each of their last four league games and the main issue has been with the goals. Paco Alcacer’s exit would certainly be haunting Ernesto Valverde who used him very sparingly. At this point of time, Barcelona desperately need a replacement for Luis Suarez who has been abysmal and how different would things have been if Paco Alcacer was there!
