Sergej Milinkovic-Savic: Central Midfielder, Lazio

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was a player that seemed to be destined for a move over this summer. He was linked throughout the transfer window with teams like Manchester United and Juventus, but no move ever came. These teams may have been scared off by his big price tag, but if there were ever a time to scoop him up at a discount, it’s right now.

Milinkovic-Savic looked great with Lazio for the last two seasons, contributing 16 goals and 10 assists in 69 Serie A appearances over those two seasons. However, he has struggled to start this season. He has disappeared for stretches of the season and has only registered 1 goal and an assist, both of which came in the same match against Genoa.

It was thought that he would play a big role in this Lazio squad as he continued to develop and because Felipe Anderson lwas sold over the summer, but he has been unable to help get the Lazio attack rolling. These struggles would hopefully allow Juve to sign a talented player who fills a need at a discount.

In spite of his struggles, SMS would still fit perfectly in the Juve midfield. Blaise Matuidi provides defensive solidity in his box-to-box role, Miralem Pjanic creates for Juve as the midfield’s playmaker, but they lack an attack-minded midfielder who can add another threat to the attack. Sami Khedira was thrust into the role last year and played surprisingly well, but it’s not a role he’s naturally suited to. Emre Can or Rodrigo Bentancur won’t be the answer either.

SMS showed last season how potent of a scorer he can be out of the midfield. With him as the third member of the midfield Juve would make an already potent attack even more threatening. A player of Milinkovic-Savic’s talents could be the difference maker for Juve in the Champions league knockout stages.
