Report claims Tottenham have agreed to their first January signing
Tottenham may finally be ready to break their transfer slumber. Reports from South American claim Spurs will sign Wilmar Barrios in January.
The rapid decline of Mousa Dembele means Tottenham need to strengthen their midfield in January. If reports emanating from Colombia are to be believed, Spurs have already struck a deal to add Wilmar Barrios in January.
The Premier League club have been interested in the physical Colombian live wire for several months now. They wanted to bring him in during the summer, but Boca Juniors were unwilling to part with their star midfielder before Copa Libertadores. That competition will be over prior to the January transfer window.
Following that logic, the Argentine club should be amenable to moving Barrios in January. The report from South American journalist Luis Fregossi claims Tottenham are willing to pay just over €23 million to get the deal done.
It’s fair to question this rumour. The idea that Tottenham would get a piece of transfer business done this far ahead of a window is borderline unbelievable. That certainly isn’t Daniel Levy’s standard operating procedure.
Then again, he understands the need to back manager Mauricio Pochettino in January. The team needs more talented players to enable the Argentine manager to compete on all fronts. Adding a versatile player like Barrios would absolutely give Pochettino more options to work with.
It’s also a logical move because Dembele’s body could betray Spurs at any moment. The more you watch him play this season, the worse his performance becomes. It’s very possible that his decision to leave Spurs is because he knows his body just isn’t up to the battle of Premier League any longer. It’s sad to watch him struggle on the pitch, but Tottenham can’t afford to dawdle on sentiment.
At the very least, Barrios is a player Spurs fans should keep an eye on in the coming months. The club may not have an agreement with Boca Juniors as of yet, but there have definitely been concrete discussions between all parties. We favour the odds of him ending up in North London once January arrives.
