Tottenham are off to their best start in the Premier League era, but Mauricio Pochettino knows he needs more talent to win silverware.

Spurs’ narrow 1-0 victory at West Ham on Saturday gave the club 21 points from their first nine matches. That’s good for Tottenham’s best start in the modern Premier League era. Ironically, that excellent start comes after a summer featuring zero signings.

Some managers might be inclined to conclude that an intense correlation exists between those two factors. Pochettino isn’t such a gaffer. He jokingly admits that he and the club’s higher-ups may be “geniuses.” On the other hand, he also says it could be “coincidence.”

No matter what, Pochettino has quelled the fears of the club’s passionate fan base by insisting that Tottenham will try to sign players in January. He didn’t make any guarantees, but the tone of his words was clear. He fully expects Daniel Levy and company to help “refresh” his squad when the January window opens.

The more interesting question is how much squad construction will Spurs attempt this winter. On the surface, there are several obvious places where Pochettino could use some help. SIgning a backup striker who can give Harry Kane some time on the bench should be a high priority. That’s a difficult purchase to make though. Not many talented young strikers want to move to a club where they will struggle to secure regular match time.

Pochettino’s midfield is the one area of the squad which will almost certainly get attention. There are already rumours flying around that Spurs have an agreement in place to sign Wilmar Barrios away from Boca Juniors. It’s certainly possible that move could come to fruition, but it’s highly unlikely terms have already been agreed to.

Even if Barrios isn’t headed to North London, at least one or two midfielders will be. Ideally the club can find a dynamic player capable of serving as an upgrade over Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier. That won’t be an inexpensive transaction for Spurs, but it’s not as if they spent any money in the summer to worry about.

The simple truth is that Tottenham didn’t sign any players in the summer because they couldn’t find a deal they liked. That will heap pressure on the club to be active in January. Pochettino will insist on investment and activity.
