Marcos Alonso has signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea, keeping him at the club till at least 2023.

Marcos Alonso, whose new contract will reportedly see him earn around £150,000-a-week, has been a revelation for the Blues since signing for the club in 2016.

The left-back graduated from Real Madrid’s esteemed academy and his first spell in English football came at Bolton, where he made 35 appearances across three years. A move to Serie A side Fiorentina was to follow, where he made a real impression with 58 appearances in 3 years, sandwiched by a one-year loan spell at Sunderland.

His impressive form prompted Chelsea to sign him and, two years later, he has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the league. He won the Premier League in his debut season with the club and helped his side secure the FA Cup last season.

It was only a matter of time before he got a call up to the national side, and in March this year, Alonso received his first call up to Spain’s national team – although he was inexplicably excluded from the squad that competed at the World Cup in Russia.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website on signing the new contract, Alonso said:

"‘I am so happy to stay here longer and to keep playing for one of the best teams in the world.‘It’s been a very good two seasons and I am looking forward to more.’"

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added:

"‘We are delighted to be extending Marcos’ contract.‘In the past two seasons he has developed into an important player for the club, demonstrating his outstanding ability and a fantastic attitude that has helped him become a Premier League champion and Spain international.’"

Alonso has made 92 appearances for Chelsea so far and has scored a pretty impressive 15 goals in his 2 years at full-back so far. Blues boss Maurizio Sarri claimed the Spaniard could be the best left-back in the world soon, and having been included in last season’s Premier League Team of the Season for his impressively consist performances, it is fair to assume that he might just be on the way to proving his manager right.
