De Gea insists he is ‘not focused’ on his contract situation
By Reyhan Nath
David de Gea has insisted that he is not focused on renewing his contract with Manchester United at the moment.
De Gea’s contract at United runs out in the summer, and the delay in signing a new deal is causing a great deal of worry amongst the fans and authorities at the club, including Jose Mourinho himself.
Talks have been ongoing for months and when Thibaut Courtois moved to Real Madrid from Chelsea, there was a genuine hope that it would finally end speculation over the Spaniard’s future. However, the stalling has only served to stir the pot even more and a number of other clubs have shown an interest in signing arguably the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment.

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, De Gea insisted that he is ‘very happy’ at United, but is not focused on extending his contract at the moment. He said:
"“What matters is the team and all of us being focused on what we need to focus on, which is winning games, rather than contracts or any topics that can be a distraction. What matters is focusing on football.“We have an important game against Everton and we have some big fixtures over the coming months. I think that’s what matters, rather than thinking about anything else.“I’ve been here for many seasons, as we’ve said. I’ve been at the club for eight seasons now. I’m very happy here. I always feel that warmth from the fans and everyone who works at the club.”"
Players often tend to under-perform when their future at their respective clubs are uncertain. The media and speculation distracts them, and it affects their performances on the pitch. De Gea undoubtedly had a World Cup to forget with Spain, but he has been as brilliant as ever with United since the start of the season.
The 27-year-old claims that his unwavering focus is down to constantly being involved with training and games. He added:
"“You have to be focused on what’s important, which is the team, winning, doing well in training and being in good shape to give your all.“You don’t have time to think about things that aren’t as important as football and the points that are at stake in the games that we have to win and do well in.”"
Juventus are one amongst a host of clubs reportedly interested in snapping up the shot-stopper. Some reports even believe that the Spaniard could leave for Turin on a free transfer, a move that would undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest Bosman moves in history were it to happen.
United have the option to keep him for another year at most, and there certainly is time for the keeper to come to a conclusion as to where his future should lie. It goes without saying that the club must do everything in their power to keep him, and the fans will be praying he signs on.
