Juventus player ratings vs Empoli: Ronaldo saves Juve from embarrassment
By John Vaccaro
LB: Alex Sandro 8.5/10
Juventus has only played well in one of its last 3 matches, but that hasn’t stopped Alex Sandro from absolutely catching fire during that stretch. He did just about everything but score for Juventus in this match. He made 4 tackles, completed 3 key passes and 2 crosses, and even put 3 shots on target. The Alex Sandro that fans have seen over the last 8 days is exactly what fans have been waiting for all season. If he continues to play like this then every team in the world will have their hands full with Juve’s full backs.
CB: Daniele Rugani 6/10
This was a very disappointing return to the starting lineup for Rugani. I won’t heap blame on him for his performance as he was thrust into this spot at the last minute because Giorgio Chiellini was unable to play, but it definitely wasn’t a good day. He looked like he completely lacked confidence and struggled through stretches of the match. He made some errors, but they luckily didn’t hurt Juve too badly. Rugani will need to work his way back into form before Massimiliano Allegri will feel comfortable starting him again.
CB: Leonardo Bonucci 7/10
This match wasn’t perfect for Leonardo Bonucci, but it was a nice bounce back after some recent struggles. He made a tackle, 3 interceptions, and 3 clearances over the course of the match. Most importantly he made a tackle that likely saved a goal in the second half. He helped cover for some of Rugani’s lapses and kept the defense from giving up too many good chances. This performance should help Bonucci get back into the good graces of fans.
RB: Mattia De Sciglio 7/10
This wasn’t a particularly remarkable day in De Sciglio’s career, but it was a solid return to the lineup after missing the first few months because of injuries. He managed to make a couple of tackles and an interception and sent in 3 accurate crosses. He wasn’t spectacular but also didn’t look like a liability out there, which should give Allegri some confidence in his ability to rotate Joao Cancelo. I’m sure De Sciglio will put on better performances in the future, but for now, Juve will just be glad to have another healthy full back at their disposal.
