5 players who can replace Romelu Lukaku at Manchester United
Maxi Gomez (Celta Vigo and Uruguay)
Unlike the other players on this list, Gomez is still surprisingly an unknown entity.
He came through the ranks at his boyhood club Defensor Sporting in Uruguay, scoring 28 goals for them in 47 appearances over two seasons.
Celta Vigo signed him only last summer on a five-year deal, and he became an instant sensation in Spain.
The 22-year-old scored 17 goals and provided 4 assists, a commendable output for a player spending his first season in Europe.
Gomez actually had offers from the cash-rich Chinese Super League in January. Beijing Guoan offered £18m to Celta for his services, but he rejected them to stay in Spain.
Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla are other clubs that have expressed an interest in signing him, but nothing materialized this summer. But a player of his caliber is unlikely to go unnoticed, and it won’t be long before other European heavyweights come knocking.
A Uruguay national, Gomez was named in his country’s squad for the World Cup this summer, but thanks to a certain Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, he had to watch from the sidelines for the most part.
A key stat to note here is that Gomez scored 10 headed goals last season, which was the highest in Europe’s top 5 leagues. Alongside Pione Sisto and Iago Aspas, he formed one of the most formidable attacking trios in Spain.
This season, he already has 4 goals and 4 assists. Manchester United should try and sign him before his market value shoots any higher.
