5 players who can replace Romelu Lukaku at Manchester United
Timo Werner (RB Liepzig and Germany)
Given that Timo Werner has been making all the right noises for quite some time now, it’s surprising that he hasn’t made the move to a bigger club yet.
Werner joined Stuttgart’s academy at the age of 6. His incredibly prolific performances for their reserves earned him the inevitable call-up to the senior side in the 2013/14 season, and he made his debut as a substitute in a Europa League qualifier.
Over three seasons for them in the Bundesliga, he played regularly, but never quite produced the kind of output that he did with the youth teams. RB Leipzig then wasted no time in snapping him up for €10 million in 2016 upon their promotion to the German top flight.
The 22 year old has 51 goals in 165 appearances in the Bundesliga for Stuttgart and Leipzig. He also has 8 goals for Germany in 21 caps.
Known for his pace and incessant running throughout a match, Werner would provide the kind of energy going forward that Manchester United could greatly benefit from. He already has 4 goals in 7 matches this season.
He represented Germany at various youth levels, before starring for the senior side at the 2017 Confederations Cup held in Russia. He helped his country clinch the title by assisting Lars Stindl’s goal against Chile in the final, and also won the Golden Boot.
He’ll probably want to forget Germany’s World Cup campaign though. He played all three matches, as the defending champions were eliminated in the group stage. He failed to score in Russia, but it’s pretty clear that he has a bright future with the national team.
Currently valued at €60m, Manchester United would probably have to break their transfer record to have any chance of signing him, but he’d definitely be a great investment for the future.
