Juventus player ratings vs Cagliari: Dybala and Cuadrado score in lackluster win
By John Vaccaro
LB: Mattia De Sciglio 6.5/10
Mattia De Sciglio wasn’t quite able to impact the match like Alex Sandro usually does at left back. He wasn’t bad in this match, but he also didn’t do anything that would make you say he was good either. He didn’t provide any kind of spark for the offense and wasn’t asked to do much defensively. He did make a tackle, an interception, and a couple of clearances, but overall it was a pretty average day for De Sciglio. On the bright side, he did at least make it through the match without an injury.
CB: Leonardo Bonucci 6/10
Leonardo Bonucci seems to have a troubling trend developing this season. he simply isn’t very good when Giorgio Chiellini isn’t on the field with him. When Juventus sold Mattia Caldara to AC Milan in exchange for Leonardo Bonucci they were expecting to get more out of him this season. He has been a liability in a few matches this season and the match against Cagliari is one that will be added to that list.
Pavoletti slipped past Bonucci to find the space for his shot that required Szczesny’s great save. If it weren’t for the keeper’s spectacular effort this would’ve been another goal that resulted directly from a Bonucci mistake. He needs to be better going forward or it might be time for the next guy on this list to take over the starting job.
CB: Medhi Benatia 7.5/10
Medhi Benatia put in another solid performance for Juventus against Cagliari. He made 3 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 5 clearances in the match and once again looked a player that could start for most teams in the world.
At this point, I’m starting to think that Juve might be better off starting him instead of Bonucci. Benatia hasn’t made a costly mistake yet for Juve while Bonucci has seemed to make them once a week recently. A few more performances like this could lead to a new center back being paired with Giorgio Chiellini in big matches.
RB: Joao Cancelo 7.5/10
Joao Cancelo continues to play like he is the best right back in Serie A. This wasn’t a particularly impressive performance by Cancelo, but the fact that this performance was somewhat underwhelming shows just how high of a bar he has already set in his short time at Juventus. He contributed 3 tackles, an interception, a clearance, 2 key passes, and an accurate cross in this match. For most fullbacks this would be an impressive workload for one match. For Cancelo it’s just another match, but it was yet another one that showcased Cancelo’s considerable talents.
