The Juventus game proved why Manchester United should make haste in tying Anthony Martial down to a new deal…and it’s not just goals

Manchester United secured another fantastic comeback win against the mighty Juventus at the Stadio Delle Alpi in the mid-week, taking their hopes of qualifying for the round of 16 to new heights. While the win has brought a sense of ecstasy in every corner at Old Trafford, it also stands as a hallmark to the positivity that has started surrounding the club following their lackadaisical start to the season.

Embroiled in the midst of all the malaise at the club were many characters – Jose Mourinho, Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial. While all these men seem to have upped the ante on their part, it’s just the last name we need to brood about.

More from Manchester United

After facing a number of censures regarding his intermittent displays, Anthony Martial has risen like a phoenix and is blazing with goals on the pitch. In his last 5 games in all competitions, the Frenchman has netted 4 goals.

The 22-year-old has already been at the helm in every comeback Manchester United have pulled out this season, be it the slick and neat setup with Paul Pogba leading to the winner against Newcastle, the extremely crucial brace against Chelsea or the equaliser against Bournemouth. However, it is his perfect display against Juventus in the Champions League that stands as an evidence as to why Manchester United should extend his stay as soon as possible.

Martial is currently scoring important goals that United are direly in need of. With Romelu Lukaku’s supply of goals having dried up, his contributions have saved the club many blushes. While that is one of the vital reasons why the club needs to offer him a new deal, another quintessential quality of the Frenchman needs to be awarded a better package.

Manchester United do have brilliant players in their star-studded squad, but few that can actually make things tick with their individual brilliance. Sanchez is capable of impacting games on his own but the Chilean appears far from settled at Old Trafford. Paul Pogba’s individual skill is one of the reasons why he is the poster boy of the Red Devils – and that aspect could also be why Anthony Martial joins him at the table.

Martial’s dribbling can devastate defenders and work wonders for United in their endeavours to create goalscoring chances. Against Juventus, he was menacing on the left, incessantly troubling Mattias De Sciglio and breaching the Old Lady’s wall with his dribbling and advanced runs.

Anthony Martial dares to take the defenders on and try to find ways past them, which not many players appear to be doing at Manchester United at the moment. Losing him to another club would mean United would require to replace him with a talent as good as him – something they would have to fork out at least €100 million for.

Martial is entering his prime age as a footballer and watching the progress he has made in the recent days, he is only bound to develop further. Sergio Romero has already drawn comparisons between him and Lionel Messi – and that ought to be the best testament why Manchester United should offer a new blockbuster deal as soon as possible. After all, winter is coming, and its necessary the club make adequate preparations to ward off the vultures that will hover above him during that time.
