Tottenham fans are desperate for Christian Eriksen to commit his long-term future to Spurs, but the Danish maestro is playing things cool.

Quite a few key Tottenham players have signed new contracts this year that will keep them in North London for years to come. Christian Eriksen is one of a handful of key Spurs who haven’t put their pen to paper as of yet. His failure to do so is putting Daniel Levy and company under serious pressure.

The talented midfielder recently told the Danish press that he prefers to let his agent handle all contract negotiations. That policy allows him to focus completely on football. He did, however, admit that there have been talks with Tottenham “many times” in the recent past.

The obvious inference there is that the club have not offered Eriksen and his representatives contract terms they deem to be sufficient. It’s believed that Eriksen wants wages somewhere close to the £200 thousand per week Harry Kane is currently earning. He’s not going to get that kind of wage packet from Levy, but he should be able to earn something close to what Dele Alli recently agreed to.

The question, of course, is whether or not Eriksen is willing to be paid on Dele’s level. If he isn’t willing to accept those wages, Tottenham may be forced to sell him. He’s not a player that Mauricio Pochettino and company want to lose, but they also won’t allow him to run his contract down. Eriksen’s too valuable to treat in that sort of manner. If Spurs do decide Eriksen is expendable, they can ask for a significant transfer fee for his services.

Eriksen and his representatives are well aware of the club’s position. They also know that signing a deal any earlier than necessary will only cost the talented Dane leverage. As such, he’s going to continue to make these public comments in an effort to put fan pressure on the higher-ups at the club. That’s unlikely to work, but it’s the one tactic available to Eriksen at the moment.

In the end, the odds still favour Eriksen signing a new deal with Spurs in the near future. He and the club have both enjoyed tremendous success during his tenure. It would be a shame for Eriksen and Tottenham to part ways until he can help bring silverware to the North London club.
