Here we are at another international break, watching more disappointing performances from the Italian national team.

Instead of focusing on the bleak outlook of the nation’s abysmal performances in the UEFA Nations League and its complete lack of dependable attacking options I think we should use this break from club play to take a look at the players who have impressed us so far this Serie A season.

Many of the entrants on the list come from Serie A’s top teams, but there have been some surprising breakouts from players at mid-table teams. There was also a plethora of attacking to choose from this season, including one of the world’s biggest names and the shocking Serie A goal leader.

It wasn’t easy to narrow down the list with many players impressing thus far this season so let’s start with some honorable mentions who have impressed, but were kept out because the 3 best players in Serie A this season all happen to be attacking players.

Honorable Mentions:

Rodrigo De Paul, Udinese

Let’s face it, Udinese is terrible, but that hasn’t stopped Rodrigo De Paul from dominating this season. He has been absolutely incredible en route to scoring 5 goals and 3 assists in 12 appearances this season. He has also put in an impressive 3 key passes per match. Udinese has only scored 11 goals this season and the fact that De Paul is responsible for 73% of them is unbelievable. Don’t be surprised if bids start coming in for him soon.

Krzysztof Piatek, Genoa

Krzysztof Piatek is another player who has been impressive in spite of his team’s mediocrity. He is currently leading Serie A with 9 goals, which has taken him from a relative unknown to one of the league’s hottest commodities. He has personally scored slightly more than half of Genoa’s goals this season and is directly responsible for 3 of Genoa’s 4 wins this season. If it weren’t for the attacking talent in this league he would have a serious case for making the Team of the Season.

Mauro Icardi, Inter

He might not have quite reached the heights I expected for him before the season started yet, but he has really turned things around after a tough start. Icardi didn’t score a goal in his first 3 Serie A appearances of the season, but he has scored 7 goals and assisted 1 more in his last 6 appearances. He is now tied for 4th in the league in scoring, only 2 goals back of 1st. At his recent pace Icardi would have a good shot at taking home the Capocannoniere title, which would all but guarantee him a spot in the Team of the Season.
