Way too early Serie A Team of the Season

LW: Lorenzo Insigne, Napoli

Lorenzo Insigne has once again been instrumental in leading Napoli to second place this season. Going into the season I thought there was a chance that Maurizio Sarri’s departure could slow down the Napoli attack, but Carlo Ancelotti’s managing and another impressive season from Lorenzo Insigne have kept them among the world’s most dangerous attacks. He is tied for 4th in the league with 7 goals and he’s added 3 assists too. He has been an absolute handful for every team he has faced this season (except when he went toe to toe with Joao Cancelo). Insigne is a threat to score at any time and has made that clear throughout this season. He was a clear choice for this team.

ST: Cristiano Ronaldo, Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo’s first season in Serie A got off to a rocky start, but he has been absolutely incredible over the last 11 league matches. In those matches he has scored 8 goals while also assisting 5 more and has either scored or assisted a goal in Juve’s last 9 consecutive Serie A matches. Juve’s attack has been disjointed for much of this season, but that has been masked by Ronaldo’s incredible play. He has himself in contention for Capocannoniere and near the top of the league in assists too. We all knew what we were getting when Ronaldo came to Juventus this season and he really has been a dominant force during his first season in Italy.

RW: Suso, AC Milan

Nobody has benefited from AC Milan’s signing of Gonzalo Higuain more than Suso. His creative abilities went to waste last season thanks to Milan’s abysmal striking options, but with Higuain up front his passing has been put to good use. He is currently leading Serie A with 8 assists, 3 more than Ronaldo in 2nd place. He has also scored 4 goals of his own and is a huge reason why AC Milan is back to competing for a Champions League spot instead of continuing to struggle to make the Europa League. Suso has established his talents over the last couple of seasons, but he is playing at a whole new level right now. The argument could be made that Suso has been Serie A’s best player this season and there’s no question that he belongs on the Team of the Season right now.
