Barcelona and Atletico Madrid failed to take advantage of Real Madrid’s loss and extend their leads. They did get a point each but both of them would’ve liked more.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid played to a stalemate in their second ever meeting at the Wanda Metropolitano. An identical score line from their last meeting at the stadium of 1-1 was visible after the final whistle. Atletico Madrid were leading late in the game through Diego Costa’s header, but Ousmane Dembele’s slick finish levelled things up in the final whistle and ensured a share in the spoils.

Diego Simeone’s men were defensive as usual and hit the opposition on the counter attack. The visitors’ defenders did get called into action and responded fairly well to threats in the shapes of Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann. In spite of the draw, the atmosphere in the Barcelona dugout will be far from positive given that the Catalans have now gone three straight matches without a victory. The display in Madrid was much better than that against Real Betis, though.

Barcelona’s draw means that the Catalans have now gone to second in La Liga Santander and fall short of table toppers by only a point. Let us take a look at the player ratings of Ernesto Valverde’s men.

Goalkeeper- Marc Andre Ter Stegen- 5/10

Marc Andre Ter Stegen did not have a very demanding evening because the defenders did their bit in nullifying Atletico Madrid’s counter attacks. However, the former Borussia Monchengladbach shot stopper should have dealt with the corner which led to Atletico’s goal in a better manner. The goalie is not enjoying his best run of form and has conceded 19 times in the league so far this season.
