Real Madrid would like to see Christian Eriksen replace Luka Modric in their squad, but there are two major obstacles to the move.

The idea of Real Madrid poaching top talent from Tottenham’s ranks is nothing new. Luka Modric and Gareth Bale have both successfully transitioned from life in North London to the Spanish capital. Don’t look for Christian Eriksen to become the third player to make the voyage.

It’s no surprise that reports from Spain claim Los Blancos see Eriksen as an ideal long-term replacement for Modric. There are quite a few similarities between the two classy midfielders. Neither is a behemoth in the middle of the park, but they are two of the best passers in the world.

Unfortunately for fans of the La Liga giants, there are two very large obstacles standing in the way of a potential deal. The first is the reported £250 million price tag Daniel Levy has slapped on his Danish metronome. That’s a clear indication from Spurs that they have no intention of parting with Eriksen soon. Rumours will persist until the player signs a new deal or is sold away from Spurs, but no one is going to get him on the cheap anytime soon.

The other obstacle is a bit more subtle, but might be even more important in the long run. Eriksen’s recent abdominal injury is causing some of Real Madrid’s higher-ups serious heartburn of their own. They already see Bale’s constant injury problems as a real thorn in their side. No one at the Bernabeu is anxious to add another injury prone player to the squad.

Given that there have been whispers that Eriksen’s current issue might be a chronic problem, it’s reasonable to think that Real Madrid will look elsewhere. The combination of a high price and a dodgy injury history is enough to give any club pause about acquiring the classy Dane.

In all honesty, Tottenham just isn’t the same club that used to send their brightest stars to Real Madrid. Under the watchful eye of Mauricio Pochettino the North London club now feels like it can be a Champions League title contender. It may take several more years for Spurs to reach those heights, but there’s a clear, logical plan in place. It’s safe to say that plan doesn’t include parting with Eriksen anytime soon.
