Jose Mourinho is infamous for pinning the blame on his players; it’s been no different at Manchester United. Here’s what the boss had to say about Paul Pogba…

Manchester United have been terrible this season, to put it lightly. There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding whether or not Jose Mourinho will be fired and it’s affected the players quite a lot. Paul Pogba is often the scapegoat for Manchester United, so it’s no surprise to see that Mourinho has had his say on the Frenchman. According to the Daily Record, Mourinho labelled Pogba as a “virus” in a heated changing room exchange. Here’s what he had to say, reportedly:

"“You don’t play. You don’t respect players and supporters. And you kill the mentality of the good honest people around you.” – Jose Mourinho to Paul Pogba"

This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Let’s face it, it’s the age-old narrative. Given the price United had to pay in order to bring Pogba in, Mourinho expects better from him. But this high expectation doesn’t mean Pogba has been bad. In fact, the reality is quite the opposite.

Pogba has been Manchester United’s best player this season. That’s not a hard feat to achieve but if Mourinho is looking to pin the blame on anyone, it shouldn’t be Pogba. I mean, I think it should be himself but I’ll leave that down to interpretation.

More from Manchester United

And as for the last comment, Pogba loves the fans. It’s one of the reasons why he gave up his future with Juventus to return to the club who got rid of him in the first place. He is consistently known to take time out in order to thank the fans for their support so that’s unfair.

There are more important things to focus on.

Rather than attacking his players, Mourinho should be taking a long look at the league table. Following this weekend’s results, the Red Devils find themselves eight points adrift of the top four. As the festive season approaches, Manchester United can’t afford to keep dropping points, they’ll only fall further and further down the table.

And, more importantly, their next match is against Arsenal who is in exceptional form. The Gunners got a derby day win at the weekend in order to heighten their league position to fourth place. It will be Unai Emery’s first meeting with Jose Mourinho as Arsenal boss, so United fans will want to wipe the smug look from Emery’s face.
