CB: Jan Vertonghen – 8

The Belgian was outstanding in the early goings when the game was still evenly balanced. He made numerous vital interceptions and his long balls were a latent threat.

He would add unparalleled levels of composure and assurance to any back line in world football.

CB: Toby Alderweireld – 8

After Leicester went a goal down and tried to force the issue, Toby simply shut them down every time. Without Vardy’s runs, The Foxes didn’t have enough to really test such a savvy defensive pairing.

It will be a travesty if Daniel Levy doesn’t do everything in his power to tie down the brilliant Belgian.

CM: Eric Dier – 6.5

The advantage of starting with Dier in the middle is that you can revert to a back three so easily. The Englishman looked unperturbed and rarely troubled in either position.

He was pro-active in possession and pulled off a couple of long balls in the first half. A few went askew in the second but overall it was a disciplined and satisfying performance.

CM: Harry Winks – 7.5

Harry was economical in possession and took no unnecessary risks. He was busy all night and kept the side ticking over for the full 90 which would have pleased Poch who fumed at Southampton’s late dominance.

A lot of his work may have been pretty rudimentary or done in the shadows but was a vital cog in Tottenham’s performance.

CM: Moussa Sissoko – 6

In an attacking sense, nothing Moussa tried came off. Most frustrating was on 38 minutes when he failed to pick out either Lucas Moura or Alli who almost burst a gut to get up beside him.

But instead of vilifying the ex-scapegoat, who can look incongruous in Tottenham’s slick attack, it’s now a little easier to concentrate on his virtues following a purple patch for the club. He made a couple of vital interceptions in the first half to deny Gray a clear run at the Spurs goal and worked his socks off all evening.
