Barcelona are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz.

The 19-year-old midfielder is Leverkusen’s youngest ever debutant in the Bundesliga, and has been tipped to have a promising career.

He already has 2 senior caps for Germany, and has been a regular for his club for more than two seasons now.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Blaugrana have been closely monitoring Havertz for some time now, and are interested in bringing him to the Camp Nou.

However, Havertz himself would prefer a move within the Bundesliga, presumably to Bayern Munich, to continue his development in Germany.

The youngster has started every single match in the German top flight this season, contributing 4 goals and 2 assists. Leverkusen has been very poor so far, sitting 11th on the table after 14 games, but Havertz has been as impressive as ever.

He’s a highly versatile midfielder. Although his best position is a number 10 role behind the striker, he has adapted well to play in a deeper role for Leverkusen, who have suffered from injuries this season.

Naturally, Havertz will be viewed by Barcelona as a long-term successor for Andres Iniesta. Ernesto Valverde has been linked with several midfielders since the Spaniard retired at the end of the previous campaign.

Barca failed to sign Frenkie de Jong and Paul Pogba in the summer, but Havertz could offer a cheaper alternative.

The German is known for his creativity, passing range, composure, and his ability to play through balls. His playing style has evoked comparisons with Mesut Ozil, although Havertz is much more of a utility player than the Arsenal star.

Considering Leverkusen’s poor performances this season, it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to hold on to Havertz for long. In spite of the rumors claiming that he’d prefer a move to Bayern, there have been no indications that the German champions are interested in signing him.

In the absence of a lot of competitors for his signature, Barcelona could pull off a massive coup by snapping him up in January, or next summer. As it stands, the only issue seems to be convincing the player himself.
