Juventus player ratings vs Torino: Simone Zaza gives Juve an early Christmas gift
By John Vaccaro
LB: Alex Sandro 7.5/10
Alex Sandro was Juve’s most influential defender in this match. He sent in a cross that Blaise Matuidi managed to turn into an attempt on goal, but he was too close to the keeper and it got saved. He also made 5 tackles and an interception in the match, including bailing out Giorgio Chiellini after he made a bad pass. Sandro played at the same high level he has all season and rendered and helped render an average attack completely inert.
CB: Giorgio Chiellini 7/10
Giorgio Chiellini suffered from the same malaise as the rest of the squad in the first half and it led to a performance that didn’t quite live up to his usual standard. He even played a poor ball that nearly created a chance for Torino. It’s rare to see Chiellini make a mistake of this nature and he was luckily saved by Sandro this time around. Things did get better for hi min the second half though and he was an integral part of Juve holding the lead, but overall it wasn’t up to Chiellini’s lofty standards. Even with how poorly Roma has played this season, Chiellini will need to be better next weekend if Juve is to avoid joining Napoli and Inter as teams that have dropped points to Roma.
CB: Leonardo Bonucci 7/10
Leonardo Bonucci wasn’t too involved in this match, but he did manage to make one contribution that made the difference for Juve. He received a throw-in from Paulo Dybala in the attacking half and for some reason decided to try continuing to push forward with the ball. It’s something he has done quite a bit this season even though it leaves Juve’s back line vulnerable. In this case it led to him turning the ball over to Simone Zaza, but Bonucci kept the pressure on Zaza and eventually forced him into the mistake that led to Juve’s goal. It was the most important moment of the match for Juventus and it was caused by Bonucci. This should keep his job safe for another week.
RB: Mattia De Sciglio 7/10
This was a match where Juventus needed their full backs to help create in the attacking half, but unfortunately without Joao Cancelo available they weren’t going to get that from their right back against Torino. It’s just not who Mattia De Sciglio is as a player. He did put in another solid but unspectacular performance in this match. However, Juve is going to badly miss Cancelo for the next month and De Sciglio’s performance against Torino once again showed why.
