The 31-year-old is easily replaceable, according to the Barcelona board.

Luis Suarez isn’t getting any younger. Even more worryingly for Barcelona fans, his age is beginning to show in his performances. While he has been a solid choice this season, Barca officials will feel like they can do better. To do so, they may choose to invest in youth.

According to The Mirror, Barca has already come up with a seven-player shortlist of strikers that could replace Suarez as soon as this January. Here are the names which have been included:

  • Kasper Dolberg (Ajax)
  • Andre Silva (AC Milan)
  • Luka Jovic (Benfica)
  • Nicolas Pepe (Lille)
  • Maxi Gomez (Celta Vigo)
  • Krzysztof Piatek (Genoa)
  • Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)

Kasper Dolberg is the best option

More from FC Barcelona

There are a number of very good strikers in that list. All of which are more than capable of becoming stars for Barcelona. However, one name sticks out to me and that’s Kasper Dolberg.

The 21-year-old is in fine form for Ajax this season. Although Ajax sits second, it’s not indicative of Dolberg’s form. Working alongside the experienced Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, he has added a lot to his own game, this is something which could benefit Barcelona. It also suggests that Dolberg wouldn’t mind playing alongside Luis Suarez, which gives Barca more time to integrate him into the side.

Krzysztof Piatek mustn’t go overlooked

When current form is considered, not many are better than Krzysztof Piatek. He has been one of the best strikers in Serie A this season, despite playing for lower-half Genoa. He has scored 18 goals in 18 appearances across all competitions this season, which is incredibly hard to achieve against the resilient Italian defences. He’s been that good this season, that Italian football fans are more interested in him than Cristiano Ronaldo. Well, perhaps anyway.

Piatek is similar Suarez in a way. He likes to play it risky at times. If there’s any way that Piatek can subtly unnerve his opposing number, then he will do it nine times out of ten. This is just an added bonus to his incredible finishing ability of course.

There shouldn’t a rush to dismiss Luis Suarez

Having this shortlist is all well and good, but be honest, Suarez is by no means abysmal. He rarely gets injured too, despite his age creeping up on him. This has been one of his best seasons so far, despite suffering a dip lately, so he won’t let this news unnerve him. Besides, he’s showing progress since his dry patch, scoring two in his last two matches.

He will continue doing what he does best, coming up with goals from a variety of different situations for Barca. Of course, Ernesto Valverde isn’t going to mind if this is the case but adding healthy competition into the mix is never a bad idea.

Next. Philippe Coutinho could be heading back to the Premier League. dark
