5 reasons Mauricio Pochettino will snub Manchester United to stay at Tottenham
4. Wanting to work with youth
There was a time when Manchester United really took pride in bringing players through their academy into their first team. That process has largely gone by the wayside in recent years. In sharp contrast, it’s still a very serious priority at Spurs.
At Tottenham Pochettino has the option to insert a young, untested player like Oliver Skipp into a Premier League match without risking the ire of the fan base. That’s not a luxury he’d be afforded at United. Any starlet that rises to the first team at Old Trafford will have been coddled for years. That sort of player isn’t exactly Pochettino’s cup of tea.
That’s a big plus for Tottenham in their bid to keep hold of their manager. The Spurs Academy is up and running. It’s already churning out quality players for Pochettino on an annual basis. In many ways, it’s the perfect storm for how Pochettino wants to build his squad.
United can talk all they want about their preference to use young, homegrown players, but when push comes to shove they will always want to buy a high-priced star instead of waiting around for a promising youngster to develop. Pochettino is smart enough to recognize that reality. If he wants to continue to work with young, humble players, he’ll snub United and stick with Spurs.
