3. The egos at United

Pochettino and Mourinho are very different people, but they do share one managerial characteristic. Neither manager has much time for players who believe they are bigger than the club that employs them.

When Pochettino first arrived at Tottenham he tried to trust the veterans in the dressing room, but he ended up moving on from them pretty quickly. The likes of Younes Kaboul, Emmanuel Adebayor and Etienne Capoue were all sold off to initiate a sweeping culture change at the club.

That’s not a luxury he’d be afforded at United. The next manager at Old Trafford will be expected to bring egotistical players like Paul Pogba into their confidence. Pochettino might be able to do that with a few players, but his harsh methods will alienate a large number of senior players at United. Ashley Young and his peers will not permit themselves to be subjected to three training sessions per day in the preseason.

At Tottenham, Pochettino is permitted to be the biggest ego in the dressing room. Spurs luminaries like Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen all have personalities which allow them defer to their gaffer. That’s a key factor for his success at Tottenham.
