2. Tony Adams (1983-2002)

It’s hard to believe that there were players that were as loyal as Toby Adams. We like in an era in which players come and go as they please, but the centre-back played for Arsenal across three decades. The 80s, the 90s and the start of the 00s. It would have been quite fitting for him to stay another few years and win the league unbeaten, but his legacy remains the same.

Adams remains one of the best centre-backs to play in the Premier League. He spent his entire playing career at Arsenal. This seems impossible given Arsenal’s lack of top quality centre-back resources nowadays. They could definitely do with another Adams coming through the youth ranks.

Adams was resilient at the back. His stern demeanour made it almost impossible for attackers to beat him. He often put his body on the line to protect the goal, but it seemed normal back in those days.

It’s a shame that nowadays he is somewhat of an internet meme. I’m sure you’ve seen the video of him performing a training drill, but admit it, we’ve all danced like that at least once in our lives…

He owes a lot to Wenger. The Frenchman came in and helped him to overcome his drinking problem. Wenger wasn’t entirely known for his man-management, however, the story between him and Adams is one of the most credible man-management examples to this day.

His leadership qualities were absolutely immense. He captained his side to many different honours, being a key figurehead to each and every one of them. According to Wiki, the Englishman remains the only captain in English football to captain his side to a win in three different decades. That record won’t be altered anytime soon, that’s for certain.
