It’s been almost a full calendar year since Tottenham signed a player. Sander Berge may finally break the transfer drought for Spurs.

If it seems like it’s been quite a while since Tottenham added a player to Mauricio Pochettino’s roster it’s because it has been nearly a full calendar year. Fortunately, it seems that Spurs may finally be poised to add a player in January. Tottenham fans will surely rejoice if Sander Berge arrives in North London this month.

Sources from Italy claim that Berge’s move to Spurs could be completed rather quickly. The Premier League club have no qualms paying £25 million for the 20-year-old midfielder. In truth, Genk could likely hold out for more money and still get plenty of interest in Berge. In other words, Tottenham need to make this move happen quickly if they want to achieve it with minimal drama.

The sticking point in negotiations could easily be Genk’s desire for Tottenham to loan Berge back to them until the summer. Mauricio Pochettino and company are in need of another adequate midfielder immediately. Don’t be surprised if Spurs end up putting a couple extra million pounds into the deal to make sure Berge can help them down the stretch of their 2018/19 campaign.

If the move comes off, credit Tottenham for stealing a march on quite a few other European clubs. Berge has the talent to become a star in the Premier League. His combination of size, speed and class with the ball make him a rare talent. The competition he’s playing against at Genk isn’t great, but it’s important to note that he’s been excellent in his club’s Europa League campaign this season. His Whoscored.com player rating average of 7.53 in those five matches is a clear indication he has the talent to compete in England’s top flight.

Of course, it would be wise for Tottenham fans to temper their expectations regarding Berge’s ability to step right in and contribute immediately. Genk play a very different brand of football from Spurs. Pochettino will need some time on the training ground with Berge to help him understand the subtle nuances of how he likes his midfielders to operate. It’s not impossible to think Berge might take at least a month to get up and running at Spurs.
