According to multiple reports, Sevilla sporting director Joaquin Caparros is interested in signing Alvaro Morata from the Blues in January as they search for a new striker.

Alvaro Morata has struggled over the last few years to really adapt to the style of play in the Premier League. The Spaniard has scored just seven times this year, with only five of those tallies coming in league play. His last Premier League goal came way back on November 4th. Since the arrival of Olivier Giroud last January from Arsenal, Morata hasn’t seen a lot of playing time after coming over to the Blues from Real Madrid for 60 million euros in 2017.

Morata saw the chance to start against Southampton on Wednesday with Giroud injured, but he had a goal called back after being caught offside in a disappointing 0-0 draw against one of the league’s bottom teams. Chelsea severely needs a true number 9 that can score on a consistent basis. That was their thought for Morata when they bought him from Madrid, but he just hasn’t worked out. He has spells of brilliance every few matches but it just hasn’t been enough and is one of the reasons Morata has been pushed out of a starting spot.

A move back to Spain could revamp Morata’s career which once had a lot of promise.

A move is best for Chelsea and Morata

Morata enjoyed a successful career at Real Madrid over five seasons, scoring 25 goals in 63 appearances for the Spanish giants. They loaned him off to Juventus for two years from 2014-16, where he netted 15 times in 63 appearances as well.

The style of play is definitely different in England compared to Spain and Italy. They are more reliant on their strikers in the Premier League but play more technical in the La Liga. Some players just can’t adapt to the difference and that’s unfortunately been the case for Morata at Stamford Bridge. He was the most expensive transfer for the Blues at the time he came over to England, which also put a lot more pressure on the Spaniard to perform. That’s no excuse for a professional footballer, but he’s just never looked comfortable with Chelsea.

There is still a reason they went out on a limb to sign Morata for such a hefty amount though. He has the abilities to be an elite scorer. He’s very good with his head, scoring the majority of his Chelsea goals in the air. The 26-year old grew up in the La Liga youth system, so he does possess very good technical skills with the ball.

Sevilla has just loaned out striker Luis Muriel to Italian side Fiorentina, which opens up a spot for contention up top. They have two other quality frontmen in Wissam Ben Yedder and Andre Silva, who have both netted eight goals apiece this season. Silva is on loan from AC Milan, so more opportunities could open up for Morata after this season is he heads back to Italy. But if Morata can get back to his form from a couple years ago, he will have no problem getting playing time for Sevilla.

A move out of England would be the best move for Alvaro Morata and Chelsea. His time in a Blues uniform is clearly coming to an end as Maurizio Sarri desperately searches for more options up front for his side.

The La Liga is familiar territory for Morata, so if the opportunity is there to head back to his native country, he should definitely take it.
