Mauricio Pochettino claims it would be “fantastic” if Christian Eriksen signed a new deal at Tottenham, but could the Dane be waiting on his boss?

Tottenham fans are desperate for new signings, but retaining the services of Christian Eriksen is just as important as any potential January purchase. Unfortunately for Spurs fans, their Danish metronome isn’t showing signs that he’s willing to commit his long-term future to the North London club.

Mauricio Pochettino makes no secret of his desire for Eriksen to stay put. He recently told reporters that it would be “fantastic” if the silky midfielder would sign a new deal. Most football observers assume Daniel Levy and company aren’t offering Eriksen the wages he is currently demanding. It’s very possible that Eriksen’s reluctance to re-up with Spurs is due to another important factor.

Eriksen and his representatives are certainly aware of the rumours connecting Pochettino with a summer move to Manchester United. The last thing they will want to do is to sign a new deal with Spurs only to see Pochettino bolt for Old Trafford. There’s no obvious candidate who would take over for Pochettino at Tottenham.

As such, it makes perfect sense for Eriksen to bide his time to see how things with Pochettino shake out. There’s really no rush on his end to put pen to paper on a new deal. In a perfect world he could go ahead and get his wages adjusted, but that’s not a normal procedure at Spurs. Even if Eriksen signed a new contract immediately, Levy would try to hold off on giving him a raise until the summer at the absolute earliest.

Tottenham fans should be viewing the Eriksen saga with a lot more patience. If he was to pop up and surprise a new contract anytime in January, it would likely be a signal that the entire squad is convinced that rumours connecting Pochettino with a move to United are baseless. Conversely, if he decides to wait until the summer to really engage in negotiations, it likely means he believes the United threat is very real.

The ultimate point here is that Eriksen is facing a very complex decision that will determine the remaining prime years of his football career. Spurs fans need to respect the player and everything he has riding on this decision. It’s a choice that could very well define his entire career.
