The idea of Malcom heading to Tottenham to provide Spurs cover for Harry Kane is intriguing, but it’s never going to happen.

Given his struggles to acclimate to life at Barcelona it’s entirely possible that Malcom might be on the move in January. Tottenham fans shouldn’t get too excited though. The chances of the Brazilian starlet making his way to North London this month are almost non-existent.

The Daily Star is carrying the story which claims that Tottenham are lining up a bid for the Barca misfit. As you’ll recall, Spurs expressed serious interest in Malcom this summer before he ultimately cast his lot with the La Liga giants. It seems logical that Mauricio Pochettino might want to swoop in and rescue from his nightmare in Spain.

The news that Harry Kane will miss at least four weeks of action due to an injured ankle absolutely puts Tottenham in the market for another forward. The only natural No. 9 available to Pochettino at the moment is Fernando Llorente. It’s hard to imagine him saving the day for Spurs. After all, many observers thought he was on his way back to Bilbao before Kane suffered his unfortunate injury.

The combination of Kane’s injury and Malcom’s unhappiness in Barcelona plants a logical base for these sorts of reports to pop up. In a vacuum, the idea of Malcom playing for Tottenham makes a lot of sense. He isn’t a classic centre forward, but he has the pace and finishing ability to play anywhere along Spurs’ front line. There’s a reason Pochettino coveted him in the summer.

Unfortunately, Malcom’s decision to move to Barcelona has drastically changed the dynamics of Tottenham bringing him to the Premier League. The Brazilian starlet didn’t agree to move to La Liga on the same wage structure he enjoyed in France. Instead, he got a bumper new contract. It’s very likely what he’s currently earning with Barcelona would put him at the top of Tottenham’s wage sheet.

It’s possible Barcelona could agree to subsidize his wages, but that seems rather unlikely. If they really are willing to let Malcom go out on loan they can probably find a club willing to take on his entire financial obligations. The La Liga club simply have no reason to give Spurs any type of discount.

dark. Next. Tottenham cannot afford to rely on Fernando Llorente

The simple truth is that once a player signs for Barcelona it’s nearly impossible for Spurs to ever acquire them. Daniel Levy and company just don’t pay the wages necessary to bring in bright young talent from one of Europe’s richest clubs. Spurs fans hoping to see a striker arrive in January need to focus their attention elsewhere.
