The Brexit could affect a lot of EU and UK citizens’ work rights on either side and professional footballers could absolutely be no exception.

Gareth Bale’s future at Real Madrid has been under shadows over the last few months after he has failed to cope up with the expectations that were set upon him after Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit. The Whites are probably even fed up with the injuries issues that have surrounded him and the wages which they have unnecessarily spent behind him.

However, political factors could also interfere with the Wales international’s future at the Spanish capital and if a “no deal” Brexit takes place, Bale will be one of the estimated 800,000 UK citizens whose work rights in the European Union will get affected. The result of the same will be declared on March 29, as per ESPN FC.

Officers at the British Consulate in Madrid have told the source and remain hopeful that the Withdrawal Agreement signed in November 2018 will be protecting the UK based workers in the EU nations. However, there are doubts over the ratification of the same by the British Parliament due to Theresa May’s House of Commons defeat on Tuesday night.

Gareth Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett refused to make concrete comments on the situation and said that the player and his representatives would wait and see what happens. He also said that he hoped that politicians on the EU and UK sides would come to an agreement, but the potentially dicey verdict meant that it was not possible to plan for the future.

Not just Bale, but several Premier League players on the other side of the North Sea could be affected. Theresa May has promised that there will be full effort put in to protect the rights of EU citizens in the UK, but there has not yet been an official word or any proof mentioned on paper about this. Bale is anyway being eyed by Spurs, Manchester United and Chelsea.
