CM: Emre Can 4/10

Over the last 6 days Emre Can has gone from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. On Monday he celebrated his first goal in a Juve uniform and on Sunday he scored his second. Unfortunately, the second was an own goal that gave Lazio the 1-0 lead. To make things worse he was largely ineffective throughout the match and was a big part of Juve’s struggle to sustain any kind of effective attack for the majority of the match. After Sunday’s performance it seems unlikely that Can would be trusted in another big match for a while.

CM: Rodrigo Bentancur 6.5/10

This was the first time in a long time that Bentancur’s youth was apparent during a match. The midfield as a whole struggled to get anything going for the first 60 minutes of the match and Bentancur didn’t do anything to change that. With the 3rd midfield spot firmly in his grasp there will be times this season that Juventus needs him to be able to change the team’s fortunes, but he seemed devoid of ideas in this match. It’s excusable for a player who is still really getting his first taste of regular top flight football, but in the Champions League there will be no excusing struggles like the midfield had against Lazio.

CM: Blaise Matuidi 6.5/10

Blaise Matuidi wasn’t great in this match and certainly wasn’t the answer to the team’s attacking struggles, but this match could have quickly gotten away from Juve if Matuidi weren’t around to make things more difficult for Lazio. He didn’t quite dominate Lazio’s midfielders like he did during the first meeting of these teams, but he did make a few tackles and interceptions that at least slowed Lazio down. He played fine for what we know he is, he just wasn’t quite what Juve needed for stretches of the match.
