When the summer transfer window opens it will be a full year since Tottenham have made a signing. Spurs need to break the streak with David Brooks.

Given the fact that Tottenham have now gone two transfer windows without making a signing, it’s pretty obvious that Mauricio Pochettino is targeting a very specific sort of player. David Brooks is the perfect young player to welcome Spurs back into the transfer market this summer.

Reports from England claim that Tottenham are plotting a £50 million bid to beat Manchester United to the Bournemouth attacker. That might seem like a massive transfer fee for a relatively unproven player, but Brooks is well worth the price. He has the natural talent to blossom into a world-class star under Pochettino’s watchful eye.

He’s already managed to contribute six goals and four assists this year for a Bournemouth side that isn’t exactly setting scoring records on a weekly basis. That’s good enough to earn Brooks a Whoscored.com player rating average of 6.87 in 22 Premier League appearances. It’s safe to assume his performance would experience a natural uptick playing alongside more talented players at Tottenham.

Pochettino is interested in Brooks for more than just his attacking prowess though. He also shows a tremendous work rate when his team doesn’t retain possession. That might be what really sets him apart in Pochettino’s estimation. The Argentine gaffer is adamant that his attacking midfielders work tirelessly to press the opposition when Spurs lose the ball.

The fact that he’s a young Welsh player also plays into his perfection for Tottenham. They can acquire him this summer and he’ll qualify as a homegrown player in all competitions. That’s a big plus for a squad that’s suddenly leaning too much on foreign players to help them compete on all fronts.

The real danger here for Tottenham is that Brooks will play even better for Bournemouth as the season progresses. If he does, look for United and other big English clubs to join the race for his services. In particular, he seems like the sort of player that would be attractive to Pep Guardiola and Manchester City. They don’t have a pressing need to acquire another attacking midfielder, but that’s never stopped City from making a big money purchase before.

When the summer transfer window Tottenham need to make a big signing. Brooks might not have the sexiest name on the market, but he’s got the talent to thrill Spurs fans for years to come. He’s just the sort of signing that can be worth the wait for Tottenham fans suffering from the club’s lengthy transfer inactivity.
