Tottenham had interest in signing Douglas Costa before he headed to Juventus, but Spurs should avoid the temptation of signing him this summer.

When the summer transfer window opens it will be over 12 months since Tottenham have signed a player. Lucas Moura is the last addition to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad. Spurs need to make sure they don’t make a big name signing just to placate their fans when the window reopens.

In other words, Tottenham should pass on the opportunity to bring Douglas Costa to the Premier League. Reports from Italy claim that Juventus are, at the very least, open to the idea of selling him this summer. In a perfect world The Old Lady would love to use their Brazilian attacker as a potential makeweight in a deal for Christian Eriksen.

The idea that Spurs would swap Costa and cash for Eriksen is laughable. Even if you remove the Danish maestro from the equation, Tottenham need to stay away from the pacy Brazilian. There’s a good reason why Juventus are willing to part ways with him.

The harsh truth is that Costa just hasn’t been very good this season. He’s only found the back of the net once in 17 league appearances for the Serie A leaders. His Whoscored.com player rating average of just 6.63 in those matches only reinforces the idea that he’s been decidedly mediocre for Juventus.

Perhaps if he were younger he’d still be worth a punt for Pochettino and company. Costa is already 28-years-old which means he’s likely to experience age related regression soon. Remember, he’s a player who really relies on his pace to torment opposing defenders. Once he loses the ability to outrun opponents with the ball at his feet, he could become useless rather quickly.

It’s also very likely that Juventus will try to drive a hard bargain if they are going to sell him. He’s certainly not going to be permitted to leave in a cut-rate deal. At worst, Juventus will try to ship him to China in a path that many of his countrymen have taken in recent years.

Add it all up, and it’s easy to see why Spurs should look elsewhere. Costa is too old and expensive to fit their transfer model. He also isn’t good enough to impact Pochettino’s first team in a significant way. Signing him would be a foolish move by Daniel Levy and company.
