Tottenham need to buy more support for Harry Kane this summer, and Mauricio Pochettino thinks Diogo Jota is the ideal addition.

Harry Kane has done a terrific job leading the line for Tottenham during the last two seasons, but if Spurs really want to win silverware he’ll need some help. That’s why Mauricio Pochettino wants to raid Wolves for Diogo Jota this summer.

Reports from England claim that Jota and Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish have emerged as Pochettino’s top two transfer targets. Grealish has been on Spurs’ radar for the better part of 18 months. Jota, in sharp contrast, is a new name to emerge onto Pochettino’s wish list.

That doesn’t mean he’s unfamiliar to Premier League fans. The 22-year-old Portuguese star has been excellent for Wolves this year. He’s a big reason why the club currently find themselves poised to qualify for European competition next year. Jota’s six goals and four assists have really helped his club see off the competition.

It’s unclear whether or not Wolves are even willing to listen to offers for their young attacker. The club have been heavily backed financially since their promotion to the Premier League and certainly won’t need to sell players to balance their books this summer. Tottenham’s only chance of getting a deal done would be to turn Jota’s head. The prospect of playing Champions League football might be enough to tempt him into handing in a transfer request.

Even if that happens, expect Wolves to hold out for a massive transfer fee. The price for a young attacker like Jota will easily exceed £40 million pounds. Don’t be surprised if Wolves try to quote an opening fee of at least double that figure to scare off potential suitors.

In other words, expect this to be a protracted negotiation if Tottenham do launch a bid. Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy isn’t going to rush to accept Wolves’ opening offer. He’ll work hard to get the player to North London for the smallest fee possible. That process might frustrate Tottenham fans, but it’s allowed them to build a lavish new stadium during Levy’s tenure.

Jota would be a great addition to Pochettino’s squad, but this will be a really difficult move for Tottenham to pull off. Spurs will need to stump a massive transfer fee to get the second striker their Argentine gaffer covets.
