Tottenham should break the bank for Youri Tielemans
Tottenham have sat on the sidelines for two straight transfer windows, but Spurs should spend big for Youri Tielemans this summer.
Quite a few Tottenham fans wanted to see Daniel Levy bring in Youri Tielemans on loan this season. His play for Leicester City has proved those fans right. It’s time for the club to rectify that mistake by making a serious bid for Tielemans this summer.
Unfortunately, Leicester’s decision to accept the talented midfielder on loan gives them an advantage in the race to sign him permanently. Brendan Rodgers is confident the higher-ups at his club can get a permanent deal done. Allegedly, Monaco are looking for £40 million to complete the transaction.
Tottenham should be all over the 21-year-old Belgian at that price. That’s well below the going transfer price for a quality Premier League starter. The fact that Tielemans is only starting to enter the prime of his career makes him worth quite a bit more.
Mauricio Pochettino’s squad also happens to desperately need a box-to-box midfield player like Tielemans. He’s been a revelation for the Foxes since his arrival. He’s given Leicester City one goal and three assists in his first seven appearances. His Whoscored.com player rating average of 7.07 backs up what you see when you watch him play. He’s an influential midfielder capable of helping Spurs now and in the future.
If Tottenham officials do want to make a successful move for Tielemans, they cannot afford to wait for the summer transfer window to begin. Instead, they must reach out to their counterparts at Monaco immediately. They must let the French club know that other clubs are interested in stealing Tielemans from Leicester City.
That could bring the possibility of paying a higher transfer fee into play, but that’s what will be required of Levy and company this summer if they really want to strengthen Pochettino’s squad. Buying promising players from the Championship and other smaller European leagues can work sometimes, but Spurs can’t rely on that as their sole transfer philosophy. The club must buy several players who can make an immediate impact this summer.
Tielemans isn’t quite the world-class player that Tottenham fans really want to see arrive this summer, but he has the potential to grow into that kind of star. He should definitely be at the top of the club’s shopping list this summer.
