Tottenham may buy England star to replace Toby Alderweireld
Tottenham are facing the harsh reality of losing Toby Alderweireld this summer, but Spurs may make a massive purchase to replace him.
If Tottenham are unable to hang on to Toby Alderweireld this summer it could have a really negative impact on Everton. Spurs are very interested in making a massive bid for Michael Keane if they part ways with their talented Belgian centre back.
Sources from England claim that both Tottenham and Arsenal are interested in paying upwards of £50 million for the Three Lions star. For manager Mauricio Pochettino, Keane would slot right into the vacancy in the starting XI that losing Alderweireld would create.
Kane is a very talented centre back, but his game is much different when compared to Alderweireld. Neither is a defender who relies heavily on making last-ditch challenges, but Alderweireld is a far superior passer when compared to Kane. On the other hand, Keane’s ability to head away dangerous aerial balls could provide Spurs with a massive defensive boost.
The real upside for Tottenham is that Keane would give them another young Englishman to build around. The former Manchester United Academy star is already 26-years-old, but that’s just entering the prime years of a career for a centre back. Adding another home-grown player to the first team could also alleviate some pressure on Tottenham’s future transfer decisions.
The real question to ask here is whether or not Everton would be willing to sell Keane at any price. The Toffees haven’t played up to expectations this season, but they’re under zero financial pressure to sell anyone. Giving up on a home-grown player in the prime of his career would be a strange decision for the higher-ups at Goodison Park.
The allure of playing for a bigger club could come into play for Keane though. Despite the recent improvements to the Everton squad, they still lag behind Tottenham in terms of overall talent and resources. It’s easy to envision a scenario where Keane agitates to play with the large group of his England teammates already playing for Tottenham.
There’s a long way to go before Alderweireld leaves Spurs, but Tottenham won’t be caught without a replacement if he does depart. Keane would represent excellent business for Spurs at anywhere near the quoted price of £50 million.
