Tottenham want to break their transfer slumber this summer and picking off an industrious midfielder from Cardiff could be a good way to start.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has made it quite clear to the higher-ups at the club that he wants reinforcements this summer. Not all of those purchases can be world-class stars. Expect Tottenham to spend some time shopping for bargains as well.

Every season, clubs that suffer relegation are forced to offload their biggest stars. As such, it’s natural to assume that Tottenham will look closely at Cardiff’s best players. The Welsh club are one of two Premier League sides who already know they’ll be playing in the Championship next season.

One player of interest to Pochettino and company is Spanish midfielder Victor Camarasa. He’s been one of Cardiff’s best players this season. Contributing five goals and three assists in 27 Premier League appearances may not seem like a great return from a 24-year-old midfielder, but it’s impressive given how little of the ball Cardiff had all season long.

Camarasa is still a Real Betis player. He was only at Cardiff on loan for the season. However, the La Liga club have a £20 million release clause in his contract. That cost certainty, combined with Camarasa’s play this season has caused Tottenham to register interest in the player.

Spurs fans should understand that Camarasa isn’t a player who will come to Tottenham and immediately impact the starting XI. He’s got the chance to develop into a quality Premier League player, but he is someone who will strengthen Pochettino’s bench in the short-term. If he’s the only midfielder purchased by Spurs this summer then fans will have every right to be disappointed.

If, on the other hand, he’s the lesser of a pair of midfielders added to the squad he could represent excellent value. He’d certainly be receiving a lot of playing time for Spurs given their injury crisis in the midfield this season. Tottenham need to increase the size of their squad if they want to compete for silverware across all fronts next season.

Camarasa isn’t the most exciting transfer target on Tottenham’s radar, but he can add valuable depth to a Spurs squad that sorely needs it. Don’t be surprised if links between he and the North London club heat up as the season draws to a close.
