Real Madrid have been expressing a lot of interest in Christian Eriksen. Is it possible for Spurs to fend of the La Liga giants?

Tottenham fans on social media have been convinced that Christian Eriksen is heading to Real Madrid this summer for most of the current campaign. As it turns out, the Danish maestro may be set to extend his stay in North London.

Marc Benamram of Goal.com is reporting that officials at Spurs are growing increasingly optimistic about their chances of signing Eriksen to a new deal. It won’t be a cheap transaction for Daniel Levy and company. The talented midfielder wants to increase his current wage packet from £75,000 to at least £150,000 per week moving forward.

Money has been an issue in negotiations, but it’s possible it’s never been Eriksen’s chief concern. The same report from Goal  claims that Eriksen’s chances of staying at Spurs have been lifted by the team’s recent success in the Champions League. It’s quite possible that defeating Manchester City over two legs has shown Eriksen that he can win big-time trophies at Tottenham.

It’s also possible that Real Madrid have bigger targets in their sights. Zinedine Zidane has been rumoured to have an exquisite shopping list this summer. Los Blancos cannot afford to sign everyone that the Spanish press have linked to Madrid. In particular, Eden Hazard has been strongly linked with a move into Zidane’s starting XI. If Real truly believe they can pry him away from Chelsea, it might cause them to pass on paying a massive fee for Eriksen as well.

Tottenham cannot afford to rest on their current laurels though. They absolutely must qualify for next year’s Champions League competition if they want to keep Eriksen’s attention focused in England. If Pochettino fails to guide his club to a top four finish this season, it’s possible Eriksen could leave for somewhere other than Real Madrid.

As it stands, the odds do seem to be heading in Tottenham’s favour. The important thing for Spurs is to take advantage of the wind currently at their backs. It’s time for Levy to make his best financial offer to Eriksen and his representatives. If that offer coincides with more success on the pitch for Tottenham, it’s very possible their stylish No. 10 will recommit his future to Pochettino’s project.
