Report claims Tottenham are willing to break the bank for Adrien Rabiot
Italian reports claim that Tottenham are willing to “smash their wage structure” to sign Adrien Rabiot, but Spurs fans should remain skeptical.
Based on talent alone, Adrien Rabiot seems like a terrific potential addition for Tottenham. Unfortunately, circumstances surrounding the French midfielder make a summer move to North London highly unlikely.
Calcicomercato is going so far as to report that Tottenham are willing to “break their wage structure” to defeat Juventus in the race to sign Rabiot. Spurs fans should read this report with at least one massive grain of salt. The idea that Mauricio Pochettino is willing to upset his dressing room to sign an egotistical player like Rabiot just doesn’t seem logical.
Again, it’s not as if Spurs couldn’t use a midfielder of Rabiot’s caliber. It’s certainly a position of need for Pochettino and company heading into the summer. The January sale of Mousa Dembele coupled with a variety of injuries have left Tottenham short of options in the middle of the pitch for the second half of the season. Inserting a player of Rabiot’s age and experience into the mix would do a lot to sure up Pochettino’s options.
On the other hand, there were credible reports that claimed Rabiot snubbed Spurs in January because of his belief that Liverpool were the only English club worthy of his services. That type of attitude simply won’t fly at Spurs. Pochettino would much rather purchase a young, unknown player who will work his socks off than spend time trying to coax Rabiot to commit himself to Tottenham.
Perhaps if Rabiot was going to be available on a cheap deal it would be a risk worth taking for Spurs. That clearly isn’t going to be the case. A big reason why Rabiot is leaving PSG is because the French giants aren’t willing to meet his wage demands. It’s hard to imagine Spurs outbidding the Parisian giants.
Juventus, in sharp contrast, are willing to shell out big contracts for certain players. Their acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo last summer was proof positive of that fact. They can easily fit Rabiot into their existing wage structure.
Add it all up, and it’s highly unlikely that Rabiot will be signing with Tottenham anytime soon. He’s got the talent, but not the right mental approach to thrive under Pochettino. Look for him to head to Italy instead.
