Mauricio Pochettino knows Tottenham need to rebuild their squad this summer, but that might require Spurs selling five key players.

Tottenham still have a lot to accomplish this season, but that’s not stopping Mauricio Pochettino from thinking about the future at Spurs. The Argentine gaffer knows the club must be very active in the summer transfer window if they want to continue to challenge for major trophies.

Fans of the North London club should take their manager very seriously when he says that a rebuild may be “painful.” The Evening Standard quotes the club’s talented manager as saying that it’s time to put more furniture inside Tottenham’s majestic house. In other words, he wants a more talented squad to play inside the club’s shiny new stadium.

Tottenham’s budget won’t allow them to buy a load of new players without selling off some key figures. These five players could easily find themselves on the way out this summer.

5. Eric Dier

Dier has struggled mightily with injuries lately, but even when he’s been fit he’s struggled to make a dent in Pochettino’s starting XI. Spurs won’t actively shop him this summer but it’s possible another Premier League club might make them an offer they can’t refuse.

After all, Dier is a well-established English international. It’s very possible another club will believe they can get his career back on track. A move to a club that consistently plays a three-man midfield might help get the most out of him. That’s where his lack of mobility can be neutralized the best.

If Tottenham receive an offer for Dier that exceeds £40 million it’s quite possible they’ll let him leave. Swapping Dier for someone like Youri Tielemans would be an upgrade that Pochettino’s midfield could certainly use. Don’t bet on the Englishman leaving this summer, but the odds are better than most fans believe.
