2. Toby Alderweireld

Alderweireld is a player that Tottenham would like to retain, but unless he signs a new contract in the coming weeks it isn’t going to happen. The worst part about his situation is that Spurs will be forced to accept a transfer fee of just £25 million due to a clause in his contract.

Even so, he still counts as a player who will be sold as a part of Pochettino’s painful rebuild. The silver lining for Spurs fans here is that the club do have talented young centre backs capable of filling in for the classy Belgian.

The responsibility to fill-in for Alderweireld should fall to both Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth. Neither is nearly as accomplished as Alderweireld is on the ball, but both have the potential to blossom into world-class defenders in time.

That means that the proceeds from Alderweireld’s sale can be devoted to a purchase at another position. That isn’t good enough news to placate Spurs fans desperate to keep hold of the world-class defender, but it might soften the blow of his departure for Pochettino and his coaching staff. Barring a last-minute contract signing, it seems that Alderweireld is destined to play elsewhere next season.
