Barcelona board is being far too reactionary following Liverpool loss
By Kian Long
It’s not the end of the world, Barcelona…
I get it. Barcelona is probably the biggest club in the world, and they home the potential best player of all time. That said, they always want to strive for the best. However, losing the Champions League semifinal to Liverpool is not the end of the world.
According to ESPN, though, the Barcelona board feels like it is. They will host a meeting to decide on the future of manager Ernesto Valverde, while they will also be considering the sale of Philippe Coutinho. I don’t know about you, but this seems incredibly reactionary to me.

Call me old fashioned, but isn’t it too early to be sacking a manager? I mean, as an Arsenal fan, I’m used to being overdue a sacking so I know this is not overdue any means. In fact, I feel like Valverde still has plenty to offer and if he wins the Copa del Rey final against Valencia then this will be proven.
Plus, let us not forget that Liverpool aren’t exactly pushovers. I mean, even Pep Guardiola has struggled to keep ahead of them at times this season in the Premier League.
Having already won La Liga and the Supercopa de Espana, Valverde is on course for winning the treble. Obviously, lifting the Champions League would have made the season perfect but Lionel Messi will get to this ‘unfinished business’ next season.
I cannot help but think this decision is made from fear rather than strategy. Real Madrid recently appointed Zinedine Zidane as manager again, so this is natural. However, of the managers available to Barcelona currently, none top Zidane, or even Valverde. Valverde is one of the best managers in the world, do not be fooled by one result.
Barcelona still has Lionel Messi and they still have the largest fanbase in the world. They will bounce back next season, whether it be with Valverde at the helm or someone else. For now, though, Barcelona must seriously assess their options.
Do you think Barcelona would be right to move on from Ernesto Valverde?
