Hugo Lloris wears the captain’s armband for Tottenham, but Harry Kane is already fulfilling those duties for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

Harry Kane didn’t play a single minute of action for Tottenham in their miraculous comeback versus Ajax, but he still managed to change the match for Spurs. His strong words to his team at halftime of their epic victory sent a massive charge throughout Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.

To put it bluntly, Kane did exactly what a club’s leader is supposed to do. Kieran Trippier was quoted by Sky Sports as saying that his centre forward went “mental” on his teammates during their half time team talk. Tottenham trailed Ajax 2-0 after 45 minutes but stormed back to advance to the Champions League final on the back of a 3-2 victory.

Kane’s ability to influence his teammates even when he isn’t on the pitch is a testament to how much respect he has in the Spurs locker room. Currently the honor of being the club’s captain goes to keeper Hugo Lloris. With all due respect to the veteran Frenchman, it’s time for Pochettino to give the arm band to his English centre forward.

Many Spurs fans have wanted to see this change for quite a while. It seemed possible that Pochettino would make the change after Lloris was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol earlier this year, but instead the club elected to stand behind Lloris. It’s hard to argue with that decision since it seems to have buoyed the keeper’s spirits down the stretch of the current season.

Even so, it’s still a bit awkward to have the keeper serve as the team’s captain. It’s better to bestow the honor on an outfield player for obvious reasons. It’s much easier for a position player to run around the pitch and communicate instructions to his squad than for the keeper to shout things out from his own goal mouth. Lloris isn’t inclined to engage in that sort of behaviour anyway.

None of that really matters though. The honour of becoming Tottenham’s captain should go to the unquestioned leader of the Spurs locker room. That means it should be the player who is most often listed to both on and off the pitch.

Kane’s inspiring team talk at halftime of the Ajax match proves he is that man for Spurs. He needs to be wearing the arm band whenever he’s fit enough to play his next match for Tottenham.
