5 ways Chelsea can benefit from the departure of Eden Hazard
5. Less Pressure on Maurizio Sarri
Having a world-class talent like Eden Hazard on your club can be both a blessing a curse. A blessing because they can win you a ton of games, but a curse in that there’s going to be significant expectations that come along with those kind of players. On the whole, Maurizio Sarri has seemed to manage it well in his first season in England, albeit with a few bumps and slumps along the way (See, Kepa Carabao Cup drama).
Sarri has kept up his side of the bargain relatively speaking, earning Chelsea a trip back to the coveted Champions League next year with a top-4 finish secured in the Premier League, though it did seem in doubt at times, and has the Blues slated for the Europa League Final at Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan pitted up against English-foe Arsenal.
With a likely downgrade coming in talent on the roster next year, the Italian tactician might be able to fly under the radar and have some of the weight of being the Chelsea manager lifted off of him if supporters can come to grips with a club in a period of flux, losing both their star forward and ability to make transfers during the next two windows.
In reality, Sarri might actually find those conditions favorable and thrive under them if he is able to successfully impose ‘Sarri-Ball’ onto the English game. The second year of this project should yield more progress on the pitch, at least stylistically. Despite being at a perceived disadvantage, one would imagine under Sarri’s leadership that Chelsea will resemble something similar to his dogged, driven Napoli teams, ready to prove doubters wrong.
