One player Liverpool will look to sign this offseason is Leicester City’s young midfielder, James Maddison.
James Maddison is one of England’s promising young stars, who could provide Liverpool some midfield and attacking depth, having spent most of his time at Leicester in an attacking midfield role. Brendan Rodgers will be reluctant to sell to his former club, which means Liverpool could have to pay a luxury price for the 22 year-old’s services.
On ESPN FC, former Liverpool player Steve Nicol said this about Maddison,
"“I would love to see a little change in that with somebody like Maddison, who no question has already shown in the Premier League, from the middle of the park, he can open defences up, he can create chances.”"
It will be interesting to see if Jurgen Klopp decides to go in for the young English star, given his future midfielder in Trent Alexander-Arnold and an already full midfield squad. However, if James Milner were to leave on a free this summer, Maddison could come in and take over his role as the first midfield player off the bench for the Reds .
James Maddison will be upset on missing out on the latest England side under Gareth Southgate, but after a seven goal and seven assist season in the Premier League, having featured in 36 matches, his stock will still be on the rise. He will be looking to go somewhere, and if it is not Liverpool expect Tottenham to possibly pick the youngster up if they do not go after Declan Rice.
It was noted earlier in the year for Liverpool that they were missing that key attacking midfield player to really connect the front three and get them ticking on all cylinders. A Philippe Coutinho type player. Jordan Henderson started to fill that role towards seasons end when Klopp was allowing him to roam up the field in more of a number eight role instead of the six.
Henderson was able to pick up a couple of key assists in the Premier League and Champions League as well as a vital goal against Southampton after coming from behind to win. However, surely Liverpool would appreciate an upgrade to a much younger player who could split the time in the role. Out of all the Liverpool transfer rumors this summer, this one might be the most likely.
