Memphis Depay could be a more realistic target for Liverpool

While Liverpool are on the hunt for their next big superstar in this year’s transfer window, former Manchester United player Memphis Depay could be a more realistic option.

Memphis Depay is currently playing at Olympique Lyon, but looks to be on the move after a very solid year in Ligue One. The Dutch winger netted twelve goals and provided seventeen assists on the season, while also scoring five for the Netherlands national team.

Depay had previously struggled to really make an impact on a loaded United front line, and was sent off to France to regain his footing. However, now he looks like a solid option that could bolster the Liverpool attack.

Apparently Jurgen Klopp thinks so as well as the Liverpool FC website has claimed the following,

"Front and centre in southern France on Sunday were Reds staff, and according to reports in France, a number of Lyon players were being watched as the Premier League runners-up seek to strengthen this summer. . . It’s also claimed that former Manchester United flop Memphis Depay was also being eyed, the Dutchman having been rejuvenated in France."

The 25 year-old would provide a speed to the front line that the Reds miss when they substitute one of the front three off unless it’s for Divock Origi. He also possesses a quality about him in front of net that Klopp could really use to provide players like Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane with a break once in a while.

Dutch teammates Depay and Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum have been tapping each other up on social media as of late which makes things seem like Wijnaldum could pull him back into England to come to the Merseyside club. Liverpool have been tied to many big name players already this summer, but surely they will not make a move until after their Champions League final on June 1st.

They have already been linked with players like Matthijs de Ligt, Timo Werner, and James Maddison, but it seems as though it will not be a very busy summer for Klopp as he likes his squad and the youth below it. This is why Depay would make even more sense, because his transfer fee will not completely break the bank.

While it is interesting to entertain the more significant, star-filled rumors, Memphis to Liverpool seems like the much more likely possibility for the summer of 2019.
